's out there as well. rob marciano here with us in atlanta in the extreme weather center. it's just a messy one. >> it is, welcome, john. not only do we have all of that happening but right now two tornado warnings out for parts of virginia and north carolina. let's go to the magic wall. kyra tuck county, northeastern parts of north carolina, and matthews county, the pink polygons that you see here these are tornadoes. and both of these cells are moving north at 40 miles an hour. so moving very, very quickly. this saul within a tornado watch that empasses a big swath of real estate across the mid-atlantic until 1:00 this afternoon. so this is -- you know, we have remnants of a tropical system which was only around for a little bit. and we got a tremendous amount of rain. flooding a huge issue. boy, i'll tell you some of the areas that we've already seen flooding in, like wilmington, 7 inches of rainfall. that's just in 24 hours. and that doesn't include, john, the 10 inches that they had two days earlier. they could very well end up with 20 inches of rainfall without a hurricane the

. bill karins tracking this storm very closely for us and how does it look right snow. >> the storm weakened from a category 4 to a 3. looks like we're going through another burst of intensification. you can see it right there. a clearing of an eye and that is usually the storm is tightening itself up and the winds will increase slightly during the day today. warm water out ahead of it and we do not expect much more weakening by the time it gets out towards north carolina. the hurricane hunter aircraft is just on its way in. now the next storm, the next hurricane hunter aircraft will be in there probably another three hours from now. until then we'll have to look and get estimates on the satellite of how strong earl is. the wind field 125 mi-mile-per-r winds. as we go into friday, our computer models, we have been watching these closely. when you see the pink line to the right, that would be a hard-glancing blow. the line all the way to the left in the blue would be huge problems. we'll end up with something in the middle and that's what the hurricane forecast is as of now. cat 3 to

'd like you to help us with some perspectives. the numbers are better than expected, but, as i understand, the gains were driven by apartment building and is this good news, bad news or something in between? >> a lot of numbers in between this. is it good news? look, anything that goes up is good news in this economy. we also have to put it into the perspective of how low we were from housing starts off of historic peaks to historic troughs. looking at that 10% number. the single rise in housing starts was good. we're seeing some increase although you have to wonder why if there's so much inventory on the market already. we came off that homebuyer tax market and we saw this huge drop in new home sales because of the tax credit, but, now, we'll start to see people come back into the market as the housing market recovers and we better be ready with some new construction to offer them. that's probably what they're thinking going into that single family housing number. apartment buildings which were up 32% month to month. why is that? because the homeownership rate is actually dropping. more

, this is -- this is a near miss. if this had been right on point, it would have been a mess for us. right now, we've got wind gusts of over 70 miles per hour and it's a sand-driven, wind-driven rain that is just really brutal. we have had reports of flooding. we still have power throughout good portions of the outer banks right now. a lot of people are really, really excited about the fact that this could have been much worse. it's downgraded in its size and power. right now, we do have hurricane warnings in effect still for the northern half of the coastline of north carolina. we also have tropical storm watches and warnings all the way up to new england. hurricane warnings for parts of new england as well. the big problem is going to be the storm surge. not so much the rain. it's going to be the storm surge, anywhere from two to four feet of storm surge, some areas picking up five feet of storm surge, but make no mistake, rainfall is still going to be an issue. we're talking about rain that could be anywhere from two to four to six inches, some areas picking up seven to ten inches of rain, especially as yo

coast through the weekend. eric fisher joins us now from ft. lauderdale with the latest. what are you watching, eric? >> i'm watching a lot of rain, tamron, moving into south florida. it is not the type of day that the beach resorts hope for. we are going to see this rain continuing through the afternoon into the evening as well. although winds not going to be a big part of this story. i've got a little personal weather station here. the water is off to my left. when i look at it, we're talking 5 to 15 miles an hour. that's certainly not an epic storm. this isn't going to go down in the history books. in terms of the wind, really not a big deal. it became a tropical storm by reaching wind speeds of 40 miles an hour. as it moves northward, we could see gusts. the 4 to 8 inches of rainfall in south florida, that can pose a problem, especially for the more urban areas. the water stacks up. we have a lot of paved roads. especially as we get into this evening commute, we could -- we always tell people turn around, don't drown. most of the flooding-related fatalities occur when people try t

as president obama's chief of staff in the senate. white house correspondent is a savannah guthrie joins us now. what is the key impact by rahm leaving and being replaced by pete rouse? >> reporter: it's a real culture shift at the white house. rahm emanuel is a larger than life figure, somebody well known. this is going to be a real difference in style. piece rouse has been with president obama since back in his senate days. he's in old washington hand, been around forforever. he keeps a lower profile, not one of these guys you'll see out at washington parties. doesn't maintain close relationships with washington reporters. i would use the word a beloved figure inside the white house. he's something of a calm erin influence. i'm told by people who have worked with him over the years that he's somebody who has been very strategic and very smart about recruiting top talents. it's kind of a who's who of names in democratic circles. people he's recruited to work for him and anita dun being one of them. he's somebody who has a lot of xperps. he's probably going to be brought in as an acting chief o

just indulge myselo this is my local church. for me it's special because when i used to pray in the jungle, i would pray a lot to this virgin here--the virgin of guadalupe. i read so many times the bible when i was in captivity. i have many favorite passages. one of my favorite is the letter from sans. and he's talking about a vision he had, and he was suffering a lot. and then he hears jesus saying "my grace suffice you." he doesn't need anything else to overcome his pain than the grace of jesus. in a way, he discovered that the more fragile he was, the more stronger he was. and it just made a lot of sense to me in the jungle because it's exactly how i felt. oprah: wow. so what's the most important lesson you think you learned from this ordeal? what did you take from this ordeal? >> well, it--something that helps me every day since i'm free, which is that--it came to a point where i had lost everything. everything. i mean i couldnt move, i couldnt go to the toilet, i couldnt drink when i wanted, i couldnt talk to anybody. i couldn't do anything without--without havingher
